A downloadable game

What is Blackmoon Prophecy?
A Final Fantasy fangame that I started long ago in 2003 and completed in 2011 that is meant to emulate the first six entries of the series (though I mostly focus on FF4 and FF5 for gameplay and mapping, and FF6 for battle aesthetics). Aside from just being a fangame, Blackmoon Prophecy is also a tribute to Final Fantasy in the sense that I'm trying to put together many of the things I loved about playing RPGs growing up into this game. It's a love letter to retro gaming and our childhoods.

How long is the game?
Most people seem to report 40-60 hours of play time.

Are there any impressive custom systems, impressive features, etc?
Long story short, no. The early Final Fantasy titles were not known to blow our minds with amazing features (FF3 and FF5 were really the only ones that did in my opinion, and only because of their job systems).

There is no steal command, "throw" items are selected by going to items and choosing the item to throw, and "jump" isn't a command, but rather several different abilities that have jumping animations.

As a result, Blackmoon Prophecy is just a retro romp that just tries to recreate what we all used to feel as we'd trudge through all of the caves and dungeons of the early Final Fantasy games.

The most advanced aspect of Blackmoon Prophecy's gameplay is a simplified version of Final Fantasy 8's weapon upgrading system. A few minigames can possibly be included as well (auction house, betting on chocobo races, etc.) but this game is kept simple to emulate the simple games it is inspired by.

How many <insert something here> are there in this game?
Permanent Playable Characters: 12 (3 being optional/secret)
Temporary Playable Characters: 2
Equippable Items: 150+
Mandatory Dungeons: 30+
Monsters: 400+
Playable Hours: 50+ (reportedly)
Optional Dungeons: 10+
Towns: 20+
World Maps: 3

Are there any bugs or anything to watch for?
Absolutely. This is an old game that I finished in 2011 and has been available elsewhere online since then, and I have stopped supporting/updating it as of 2019 simply because I wished to move on. Still, I know that there are people who play it and like it, so I'm bringing it to the itch.io crowd!

Like this game? Check out the sequel, which is also available on itch.io!

December 2023 Update: This game was completed over 12 years ago. It is from a different time in my life, and I do not support the game any longer or offer any assistance/help any longer so please do not come to me for any. Having completed the game more than a full decade ago, I just honestly don't remember very much from the game and any assistance I would offer would not be very helpful. Plus, twelve years later, I just have no interest in the Blackmoon Prophecy games and have moved on from them fully. Please reference user-made documents/manuals or YouTube playthroughs if you need any assistance. I still appreciate hearing from people who play and enjoy my old games though, so don't hesitate to leave a comment if you wish to do so!

I am a huge fan of this series,  UPRC is probably tired of praise but, dude, you nailed it outta the park so to speak on this game. This is highly impressive no doubt my only other fav game is Vampires Dawn 1 and 2.

I have been playing this game for years on and off and I really miss the faqs and maps also Blackmoon Prophecy Randomized from rpgmaker.net which somehow are not available anymore??

Perhaps I or another fan could create a full FAQ with maps similar to fireflys( rpgmaker.net) or maybe someone has these documents somewhere and if okay with UPRC perhaps hed allow these to be downloaded in the future here where they belong to the creator.. It would be great for veteran players and new ones to have access to these guides for both BP 1 and 2.

Thank you UPRC for your dedication to this series!! All the work time and effort. This man deserves money gifted for future projects which I'd absolutely donate even now.

Alas my favorite characters are

Vahn

Nobumasa

Siegfried

Vera.

Ps I have Blackmoon Prophecy randomized which I think also would be great to have available on here. Anything I can do to help LMK. Thank you everyone!

I’ve definitely moved on fully from Blackmoon Prophecy, but I still appreciate hearing from people who enjoy the games! You can make absolutely any content that you want for the game.

As far as guides go, I think that Lancer’s playthroughs of both Blackmoon Prophecy games are extremely comprehensive and thorough, and are great resources for anyone who might be stuck.

The randomizer isn’t on Itch mostly because it was just really broken. Thomas Stout, the self-proclaimed biggest Blackmoon Prophecy fan, ran into a lot of bugs and issues trying to play through it.

With that said, I’m working on a community game for a Discord server right now and I’ll be finishing it up this month. Once it’s done, I’ll be picking up and working on a Final Fantasy fan game, Memories of Bygone Days, that has been on hiatus since last year which you can find on my Itch profile as well.

This might just be my version of the game, but isn't resistance completely broken? Enemies hit me with an x-fire spell and hit me with 1200 dmg, but if I equip the sage cap amaterasu hits me with fire3 or nuke and does 0 damage. I just got access to the airship and I beat the ninja tower by using sage caps and water medalions. I should not be allowed to do that.

Its apart of figuring out strategy in a seemingly no win situation. Something Final Fantasy and many other games throw your way. Nothing is wrong you just were smart enough to figure it out

Is there anything good that can be found with chocobo races, or can I just skip it? It feels like it would take 10 hours of constant resets to find out the entire reward list manually.

These Side attractions are not needed to beat the game, just to add extra content.

you do not need as far as I know anything there to progress, but the winnings are probably good items and money.

Hello, one thing that is really bugging me about playing this is that there is no d-pad support. The joystick to move is horrible in old games like this. Feel like I'm walking on ice.

The game was made in RPG Maker 2003 which may not have native support for whatever gamepad you are using. Most gamepads should work fine. There’s nothing I can do about this.

I tried an xbox and ps4 controller and it's the same.

Try adding the game in Steam and enabling Steam input for it. I was able to play both Theia Crimson Eclipse (RM2K3) and the PC Zelda 2 remake (Game Maker) with my DualShock 4.

Also you can play this game on mobile via phone  using EASYRPG for Blackmoon 1 and then JOIPLAY for Final Fantasy Blackmoon 2.

Hope this helps.

Has anyone talked about what's considered the best party combo, what stat increasing item to give to who?

(1 edit)

In my honest opinion
Vahn (obviously)
Jasmine (she can get Geo Wall which is like the absolute best defensive ability in the game because it completely negates elemental attacks and is a godsend in the endgame(
Nobumasa (extremely consistent damage potential especially with damage buffs and good weapons, his Yasuragi ability makes him an absolute powerhouse in basically every fight in endgame(
Elina (she's just a really good healer. For all I know Ami and Bosche could be better since Ami gets White Wind and Bosche has Pandora's Box but Elina is just really good and she also has X-Esuna)
I barely used stat increasing items but I'd recommend giving mp increasing items to Vahn, Nobumasa and maybe Elina if you feel like she needs more mp (Vahn and Nobumasa already have fairly low MP pools especially when compared to the magic casters) Jasmine's abilities cost 5% of her mp so the more you increase her mp, the more her abilities will cost. Give like...magic upgrades to Elina and Jasmine, Vigor upgrades to Vahn and Nobumasa, Agility, Guard and HP upgrades should go to whoever needs it most.

I have this Letter to Kokkol. Where do I go?

You'll want to take that to Kokkol himself. Check this map, almost directly southwest of the arena.

Thanks man, Good luck with that Penumbra project. :)

That was actually cancelled about a year and a half ago, haha.

Good to known. Thx.

Wow, you replied to the request for help the same day the request was made. That's awesome!

The joy of email notifications!

Sweet! Also, I started playing this shortly after I posted it. I'm currently in the pyramid, and I'm super super impressed so far. Thank you so much for making this!

This is probably the best fan final fantasy game I've ever played. Played through it over the years and find myself coming back to it years later. Definitely worth a download
