Final Fantasy Blackmoon Prophecy
A downloadable game
What is Blackmoon Prophecy?
A Final Fantasy fangame that I started long ago in 2003 and completed in 2011 that is meant to emulate the first six entries of the series (though I mostly focus on FF4 and FF5 for gameplay and mapping, and FF6 for battle aesthetics). Aside from just being a fangame, Blackmoon Prophecy is also a tribute to Final Fantasy in the sense that I'm trying to put together many of the things I loved about playing RPGs growing up into this game. It's a love letter to retro gaming and our childhoods.
How long is the game?
Most people seem to report 40-60 hours of play time.
Are there any impressive custom systems, impressive features, etc?
Long story short, no. The early Final Fantasy titles were not known to blow our minds with amazing features (FF3 and FF5 were really the only ones that did in my opinion, and only because of their job systems).
There is no steal command, "throw" items are selected by going to items and choosing the item to throw, and "jump" isn't a command, but rather several different abilities that have jumping animations.
As a result, Blackmoon Prophecy is just a retro romp that just tries to recreate what we all used to feel as we'd trudge through all of the caves and dungeons of the early Final Fantasy games.
The most advanced aspect of Blackmoon Prophecy's gameplay is a simplified version of Final Fantasy 8's weapon upgrading system. A few minigames can possibly be included as well (auction house, betting on chocobo races, etc.) but this game is kept simple to emulate the simple games it is inspired by.
How many <insert something here> are there in this game?
Permanent Playable Characters: 12 (3 being optional/secret)
Temporary Playable Characters: 2
Equippable Items: 150+
Mandatory Dungeons: 30+
Monsters: 400+
Playable Hours: 50+ (reportedly)
Optional Dungeons: 10+
Towns: 20+
World Maps: 3
Are there any bugs or anything to watch for?
Absolutely. This is an old game that I finished in 2011 and has been available elsewhere online since then, and I have stopped supporting/updating it as of 2019 simply because I wished to move on. Still, I know that there are people who play it and like it, so I'm bringing it to the itch.io crowd!
Like this game? Check out the sequel, which is also available on itch.io!

December 2023 Update: This game was completed over 12 years ago. It is from a different time in my life, and I do not support the game any longer or offer any assistance/help any longer so please do not come to me for any. Having completed the game more than a full decade ago, I just honestly don't remember very much from the game and any assistance I would offer would not be very helpful. Plus, twelve years later, I just have no interest in the Blackmoon Prophecy games and have moved on from them fully. Please reference user-made documents/manuals or YouTube playthroughs if you need any assistance.

This might just be my version of the game, but isn't resistance completely broken? Enemies hit me with an x-fire spell and hit me with 1200 dmg, but if I equip the sage cap amaterasu hits me with fire3 or nuke and does 0 damage. I just got access to the airship and I beat the ninja tower by using sage caps and water medalions. I should not be allowed to do that.
Is there anything good that can be found with chocobo races, or can I just skip it? It feels like it would take 10 hours of constant resets to find out the entire reward list manually.
Hello, one thing that is really bugging me about playing this is that there is no d-pad support. The joystick to move is horrible in old games like this. Feel like I'm walking on ice.
The game was made in RPG Maker 2003 which may not have native support for whatever gamepad you are using. Most gamepads should work fine. There’s nothing I can do about this.
I tried an xbox and ps4 controller and it's the same.
Try adding the game in Steam and enabling Steam input for it. I was able to play both Theia Crimson Eclipse (RM2K3) and the PC Zelda 2 remake (Game Maker) with my DualShock 4.
Has anyone talked about what's considered the best party combo, what stat increasing item to give to who?
I have this Letter to Kokkol. Where do I go?
You'll want to take that to Kokkol himself. Check this map, almost directly southwest of the arena.

Thanks man, Good luck with that Penumbra project. :)
That was actually cancelled about a year and a half ago, haha.
Good to known. Thx.
Wow, you replied to the request for help the same day the request was made. That's awesome!
The joy of email notifications!
Sweet! Also, I started playing this shortly after I posted it. I'm currently in the pyramid, and I'm super super impressed so far. Thank you so much for making this!
This is probably the best fan final fantasy game I've ever played. Played through it over the years and find myself coming back to it years later. Definitely worth a download
