A downloadable game

Final Fantasy Provenance is the successor to my Blackmoon Prophecy fan games and takes place in an all new setting (thus it has nothing to do with Blackmoon Prophecy, only carries on its mantle). It officially started development on June 11, 2023. Estimated completion date is probably sometime in 2025-2026.

Development updates and screenshots will be shared here on the itch.io page's devlog, as this is going to be the main download/information hub for the game. This page will undergo several changes through the game's development!

The Baron Empire has long sought to conquer and rule. For generations, they have used the might of their powerful kingdom to enact their will upon other lands, placing them under Imperial occupation to harvest and acquire their resources.

However, in recent years, resistance against the Imperial occupation has been more successful than in decades past. Other kingdoms are finding ways to go toe to toe with Baron in their own lands, creating "free" regions where the Imperial occupation has been pushed back entirely.

The Emperor of Baron, Gladeus Pendrake, has become nervous at the prospect of the kingdoms finally becoming strong enough to stand against Baron and knows that they must do something to maintain their stranglehold on them. A plan is then devised by the Emperor and his council - obtain the power of the fabled and legendary Aeons, all-powerful and mythical beasts that seemingly exist only in ancient tales. The Emperor knows that there must be some truth to the tales and will leave no stone unturned in his pursuit of this legendary power.

  • Character Customization: Characters will be able to gain new abilities and functions through the equipping of specialized equipment called Diacite.
  • Forty Hours of Play: This is currently an estimate, but since I usually end up underestimating the length of my games... expect something in this ballpark or more!
  • Original Graphics: Despite being a fan game, all character sprites and tiles are original creations made specifically for this game and are inspired by Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy V. Character portraits are AI generated.
  • Eight Playable Characters: A tight roster of party members to ensure that everyone feels unique!

I'm curious as to why you decided to go with MV over MZ.

I've had MV for a while, am comfortable with it, and don't want to shell out money for MZ since I don't feel like the improvements it offers justify the cost.

Totally sensible decision and I'd never suggest switching engines, but I do have to say you're missing out on a lot on MZ!

IMO it's a choice between keeping your perfectly well rounded setup that you've already developed on MV (and I know you have a great grip on MV since you've been working on it for years) vs. MZ's SEVEN(!) major updates plus the absolutely crunchy plugin database. Just... Making Action Sequences with the (free!) Visustella Battle Core is soooo much better than notetags on MV, for example -- using both Common Events AND the refurbished Plugin Commands command (lol) is the perfect illustration of MZ's improvements.

But if you already have your MV setup ready, then you can streamline those MV battle sequence stuffs pretty alright.

I just, I can't read a comment like "the improvements don't justify the cost" and not give my 5 cents given the absolute massive list of updates and new stuff it got. I can do so much stuff on MZ, going back to MV kinda gives me the chills tbh 😭
